Lost baggage | What to do ?

First of all - do not panic.

Thousands of passenger bags are mishandled (other words to say - temporary lost)  by the airline industry every day  and their owners want to be reunited with their bags quickly and expect their problems to be addressed as efficiently as possible, whether by airport authorities, ground handlers or airline representatives. To recover passenger loyalty at this difficult time it is crucial that resources work rapidly and in a flexible way, in order to meet passenger demands.

Unfortunately, baggage does not always arrive at its intended destination. Or, if it does, it might turn up damaged or with something missing. When this happens, an airline is liable for the damage under the Montreal Convention. But the Convention puts a maximum limit on the airline’s liability of 1,000 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) per passenger. And it puts time limits on making claims for compensation.

Delayed baggage

You should know that the best way resolve this problem - be calm and visit office of airline in the airport or it's appropriate agent and complete written or automated claim  for the missing baggage.

The staff in the claim office could use some termins, that you can't understand. You can find some useful info about such kind of words on DEFINITION page.

They has a way to track your bags, and about 98% of all mishandled baggage is returned eventually. If your bags on the next flight, you could have them within a few hours.  If bags have been sent to the wrong airport, it could take a couple of days. In this case give the personal of airline a hotel or home phone number and address.

The airlines will typically deliver you your baggage when they  found it; you will rarely need to come back to the airport to pick it up. In addtion, most airlines will reimburse any unexpected expenses caused by the loss or delay.

But there is a danger to loose some subseguent awards as far as the airline sometimes has the option to deduct any reimbursement given.

Lost baggage

If your baggage completely lost by airline loses, you should to get a written claim for lost baggage . This claim may be a different form than the original "missing luggage" form.
This can be done at the airport or by mail.

On domestic flights, the airline baggage liability is limited at $3,000 per passenger. On international flights, the liability limit may vary, as it  is governed by various international rules, including the Montreal and Warsaw Conventions. Check your airline Web site for specifics.
You may be asked for receipts. If you have them, include copies in any documentation you send to the airline. You can purchase "excess valuation" insurance if your checked baggage is worth more than these limits.

Stolen Baggage

Move directly to the baggage claim area when you get off your flight. Most airlines scan bags when they're loaded into the baggage claim area and keep records, especially at larger airports. Once you've left the baggage claim area, your claim is no longer with the airline, but with the police.

Time Restrictions and Deadlines

When you file a report, most airlines will give you a claim number (or file refference number) and ask that you call or write the airline within 21 to 45 days

As Paulo, I flew to Santiago from Johannesburg ,South Africa via Sao Paulo. the suitcase never arrived in Santiago.
It has been 3 weeks since it was reported. I claimed from South African Airways who were the first leg carrier and LAN who were the second leg.
LAN now claims that they only pay per kg and it doesn't even cover the cost of the suitace (a delsey solid type) . South African have a value system where you write each lost piece and an estimated value with a maximum claim value but kg not part of the issue.
I heard about these two conventions, Warsaw and Montrial. How do I know which convention gets used by which airlines?

i flew from Istanbul to Budapest through Rome.and Alitalia lost my baggage. at the airport in Budpest i went to ' lost and found ' then i filled forms and they gave me a file reference number.but when i typed my file reference number on alitalia.com, it said ' wrong entry'.and then i got my baggage back the day after. my baggage were left in Rome by alitalia. but most of the things inside were wet.it was a rainy day when i travelled through Rome. so i guess they dropped my baggage in the middle of the landing filed of airport in Rome.my advice to you all is never to fly with alitalia.

I flew to Lagos from Riyadh on the 25th of January, 2009 by Egypt Air with transit in Cairo. The worst experience of my life. I arrived in Lagos but not my baggage. My bag contains Laptop, Montblanc pen, Wool Suit, Dress Shirts, Brand New Shoes, Important Certificates and a whole load of other stuff. After a lot of running around, they paid a baggage delya fee of USD $100. I am told that claim had been filed.

I would not recommend Egypt Air at all. The experience and the follow up was traumatic and with absolutely no responisibility. I agree with loads of passengers that Egypt Air does not deserve Star Alliance. My file number is LOS MS10601.

Please advise what I should do next and is there a chance of recovery?

Distraughted....

I flew roundtrip JFK-JNB-CPT on South African Airways. They managed to lose my luggage TWICE - once on the way over and again on the way back. The first time, they eventually found my luggage and delivered to my hotel in Cape Town. For the return trip, however, they lost not only mine but those of at least 30 other passengers. We reported this in (while waiting in line for 2 hours) immediately. However, now it has been several days and the airline has not contacted me and all calls have not been returned. It appears that the airline has washed its hands off this matter. Given teh hgih theft rates at JNB, I am not confident that my baggage will ever be found. What can I do?

Also, I would like to warn people to NEVER fly thsi incompetent airline. I never had my bags lsot ever even though I've travelled all over the world. Within one week, SAA has managed to lose my luggage twice and has been very unhelpful in resolving the matter.

On 20 November 2008 when my cruise ship (MSC Musica) docked in Rio de Janerio my luggage was placed outside my cabin to await transfer to the customs building on the quayside. When I arrived to uplift my baggage one case was missing and despite a search by the crew and management it did not turn up. I obtained a "lost Baggage" form signed on behalf of the captain but my insurers failed to pay up because when it was set outside the cabin it was outwith my control !!! Surely this is a common problem ? Does the Montreal Convention cover this ?

South African Airways follows the Warsaw convention, and despite you listing all your goods, they only pay $20 per kg, or $460 for all your luggage. The latest report in the Mail and Guardian online claims nearly 8000 bags went missing with South African Airways between Dec 09 and Feb 10. The world cup in South Africa is going to be awkward if SAA cant pull their socks up. The CEO has been replaced. 2000 staff made redundant. Technical and experienced staff leaving the company. I would not fly with SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS

when we were to board the plabe from riga to copenhagen they just picked out 15 people and told just to step a side and watt there. We tried to ask why, but they simply just ignored us and said that they will explain later. When they got the selected ones out from the gate and on to the bus they closed the gate. Still without any info. Then a guy came and told us that they have had to change the aircraft to a smaller one, because the original one was broken. People where asking the Air Baltic representatives how they would get to Copenhagen. They said right now we don't know. On my own initiative I left the gate and went up to the ticket office. They managed to get me on flight to copenhagen via Helsinki arriving 16.15 instead of 12.50. When the guy at the transfer center in Riga checked me in on the new "alternative" flight, issued by arbaltic, he wrote with a pen on my boarding card a new tag number.I got to COP but haven't seen my bag since.AirBaltic refuses to talk to
